Infant OT & Feeding Therapy at Áha OT

On this page you'll find all you need to know about our infant occupational therapy and feeding program. We know most people don't know what OT is, and especially not for infants . . . so we explained it all below.

FAQs

How Can OT Help?

Our job is to help babies "baby" better. This means eat, sleep, poop, move and just exist happily. We apply neurodevelopmental principles along with a deep knowledge of reflexes and human development to improve your baby's strength and coordination throughout their whole body. With feeding therapy our approach is the same - we address the whole body to optimize feeding and oral motor skills.

The Infant OT program is an ACTIVE therapy program - therapy is not done "to" or "on" your baby but "together with" your baby.

The issues we help with the most are:

  • breast/bottle feeding

  • tongue/ lip ties

  • transition to solids

  • bottle refusals

  • rolling/sitting/crawling

  • fussy babies

  • asymmetries/head shape/torticollis

  • fine motor skills

  • picky eating/low intake

  • drooling

  • open mouth posture

  • breathing & sleep

What does an evaluation look like?

An infant feeding evaluation is a comprehensive developmental feeding assessment.  The therapist will check your baby's reflexes, movement skills, breathing, visual skills, and oral motor/feeding skills as needed.  It's a 90-minute long session, which will give us plenty of time to look for compensatory movement patterns and to learn about your baby's unique feeding challenges, as well as give you time to practice any exercises with the therapist's guidance.  We will then create a customized Action Plan (home program) including relevant exercises/activities that were reviewed during the session.

Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled no sooner than two weeks after the initial consult.  We typically see most infants for anywhere between 2-6 sessions (with 1-2 weeks between each appointment).

The cost of an infant evaluation is $350 / 90 minutes

The cost of a follow up appointment is $200 / hr

What makes our therapy approach different?

Our approach looks at the whole picture. Rather than chasing individual symptoms, we work to understand what's getting in the way of typical development and help families build practical strategies that fit everyday life.

Feeding challenges, body tension, torticollis, reflux, tummy time struggles, and developmental concerns don't happen in isolation. They're often connected through how a baby moves, regulates, breathes, and experiences the world. We strongly believe that infant reflexes are foundational to human development too, and consider all aspects of development in order to guide little one's through their first year of life.

We help you make sense of what you're seeing, so you can feel confident supporting your baby in everyday life.

If you've found yourself Googling any of these things at 2 a.m., you're in the right place.

How does a VIRTUAL SESSION work with an infant?

A Virtual Feeding Evaluation is a comprehensive developmental feeding assessment.  Nat will check your baby's reflexes, movement skills, breathing, visual skills, and oral motor/feeding skills as needed.  Nat will direct the session via a Google Meet link, and the parent(s) will perform the necessary movements.  Usually, families opt to use a computer and just place it on the floor, where a majority of the session will take place.  In a virtual session, the parent(s) essentially become Nat's hands and occasional eyes when they need a better view of something they can't see via the computer camera.

It's a 90-minute long session, which will give Nat plenty of time to look for compensatory movement patterns and to learn about your baby's unique feeding challenges, as well as give you time to practice any exercises with Nat's guidance.  Nat will then create a customized Action Plan (home program) including relevant exercises/activities that were reviewed during the session.

Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled no sooner than two weeks after the initial consult.  Nat typically sees most infants for anywhere between 2-6 sessions (with at least two weeks between each appointment).
